TODAY’S MUSINGS
No riot of color or chilling air, November’s subtlety in LA is lost to anyone not labeled “native.”
Feigning Hollywood starlet ennui, tanned summer leaves serenely suicide from weary trees, “Too hot,” they lament, “I cannot stay a moment longer.”
Stifling Santa Ana winds unfurl scents of burning sagebrush with feelings of prickly dread and stopped time. “Earthquake weather,” we proclaim.
Porch lights flicker awake by 5:00 pm, lighting barefoot children pedaling bikes in dusty cul-de-sacs. LA quietly shifts into autumn, leaving paroxysms of sunset hues to the other coast.
TODAY’S RECIPE:
I wanted to capture the feeling of LA’s autumn in a festive cocktail for Thanksgiving and beyond.
Elixir For Autumn in LA

Leave it to a baker to blend the flavors of bitter orange, almond, caramel, and ginger into this not-too-sweet elixir for the West Coast.
Ingredients
- 2 ounces Amaro Angelino (bitter citrus flavor)
- 2 ounces Disaronno (almond flavor)
- 1 ounce Shanky’s Whip (caramel vanilla flavor)
- ½ ounce fresh lemon juice
- 3 ounces ginger beer
- 2 strips of orange peel
Directions
- Add all ingredients except peel to a shaker filled with ice. Shake well until chilled.
- Strain into two rocks glasses over fresh ice. Express the orange peel over the glasses to release the oils, then drop it into the glass.
