There’s a challenge gaining popularity in the blogosphere daring us to get rid of 50 things in our lives. The challenge is based on the book Throw Out 50 Things by Gail Blanke. I read an excerpt of the book in Real Simple magazine and decided to give it a try. I was doing a little internet research today on the subject (get the benefits of the book without actually buying it) and discovered that I’m not the only one who is enamored with the idea. The premise is simple – throw out 50 things (and make a list of them) to make fresh room in your life for what matters.
I began thinking about how easy it would be for me to throw away 50 things – and what a waste. Instead of throwing out, how about finding someone who wants it? Some of these “things” in my life have value, or their vintage, or irreplaceable (if only because no one makes them anymore). Also, I can make MONEY if I sell them. So, instead of throwing out 50 things, I decided to Ebay them. To begin my purging process, I planned to sell some of my film camera equipment (quickly to be replaced with my new digital camera), but I came across other junk before I even got to the cameras. Stuff much easier to ship. If I get more than 99 cents for any of them, I’ll consider each sale a success. Here are my first items:
Maui Jim Sunglasses – 2 pair. Used.
God-awful ugly salt and pepper shakers that an ex-boyfriend gave me 10 years ago. Yes, they are pink cows. I really should re-gift these, just to see the reaction.
A flash for an old Canon camera.
An old Polaroid instant camera and a pack of film that expired in 2003
And the best…expired 35mm film from 2002 and 2003.
Let the bidding begin!
I just chuck stuff when I get sick of looking at it: 4 years is the average length of something’s lifespan around me, if I don’t use/like/need/want it.
note: where are the shaker holes on those cows? hee hee!
double note: I’m sure that book would be on my list … after 4 years … if I bought it.
